In August 2017, the series was announced by iQIYI and Zhejiang Television under the working title "Deer Run", originally slated to premiere in 2019. During development, the element fire was gonna be included, but it was changed to light after discussions with Nickelodeon, which said that it was too dangerous.

In October 17, 2018, the series became the first to be commissioned as part of a development program that Nickelodeon launched in China. A second season was also confirmed at MIPCOM. In February 23, 2021, a third season was confirmed to be in production.
